What Your Multivitamin Isn’t Doing For You
You’re doing your best—reading labels, buying the “good” brands, maybe even taking a multivitamin religiously every morning. But if you still feel foggy, tired, or like your hormones are off, it might be time to ask…
Is your multivitamin actually doing anything?
The truth is: most store-bought multis aren’t built to support your real needs. They're generic, one-size-fits-all formulas that look good on the label—but don’t do much in your body.
🔎Let’s break it down.
1. The forms of nutrients matter
Your body can’t use every ingredient equally. For example, folic acid is the synthetic form of vitamin B9—and it needs to be converted into the active form (methylfolate) before your body can use it.
But here’s the kicker: if you have a MTHFR gene mutation (which affects up to 40% of the population), you may not be able to convert it efficiently. That means you could be taking a “B-complex” and still be functionally deficient.
The same goes for B12—you want methylcobalamin, not cyanocobalamin. Magnesium? Skip oxide (barely absorbed) and go for glycinate or bisglycinate instead.
2. You’re probably missing what you actually need
Most multis skip over:
Zinc (crucial for immunity, hormones, and skin health)
Choline (essential for liver detox and fertility)
Active B vitamins (for energy, mood, and metabolism)
Bioavailable iron (especially if you’re menstruating or postpartum)
Sometimes they are included, but usually doses are too low to be meaningful.
3. There’s too much of what you don’t need
Some multivitamins overload your system with things like:
Calcium (which you might not need in supplement form unless specifically tested)
Vitamin A in preformed amounts (which can build up if not balanced properly)
Fillers, food dyes, or binding agents
And a lot of the trendy ingredients? Pretty on paper, but clinically irrelevant in those tiny doses.
4. What works for someone else might not work for you
Maybe your friend swears by her new greens powder. But without looking at your specific nutrient needs, bloodwork, symptoms, and lifestyle, there’s no way to know if it’s doing you any good—or actually making things worse.
💊This is where personalized supplement protocols come in. As a naturopathic doctor, I don’t just hand out bottles. I look at your whole picture: from labs and symptoms to digestion, stress, and hormones. That way, we give your body exactly what it needs—nothing more, nothing less.
